DS Smith plans to start its new corrugated plant in Poland at the end of June. The project is part of the company's £100 million investment in both Poland and Italy, which DS Smith announced in 2020.
Construction began last year on the UK-based paper and packaging company's new corrugated packaging plant, located in Bełchatow, a town south of Lodz in Poland. DS Smith originally planned to commission the plant at the end of March but pushed it to late June. Commissioning of the plant includes a new corrugator with an annual production of 180,000 m².
When complete, Bełchatow will be the sixth corrugated packaging plant of the company's Polish subsidiary, DS Smith Polska, and will create over 200 new jobs.
DS Smith announced the original investment cost for the new Bełchatow plant would be about 250 million Polish zloty, and the company spent nearly 4 million zloty to buy the 13-hectare plot of land in 2018.
In addition to the expansion in Poland, DS Smith started operations in March of a corrugator and three out of 10 packaging production lines at its Italian site in Castelfranco Emilia near Modena, Italy.The annual production capacity of DS Smith's new corrugated board and packaging plant in Italy is over 200 million m².
