January 20, 2025 (press release) –
From 31st March 2025, a new recycling legislation, Simpler Recycling, will come into effect.
The new legislation requires businesses to separate recyclable materials from general waste. This includes food waste, which must be collected and recycled separately.
What changes?
- By 31st March 2025, all businesses (including schools and hospitals) with 10 or more employees must separate recyclable materials like plastic, glass, metal, paper, and food waste from general waste.
- By 2026, households must follow similar rules, with weekly food waste collections and bi-weekly general waste pickups. Dry recyclables like metal, glass, paper, and plastics can be combined in one bin.
- By 2027, micro-businesses (with fewer than 10 employees) must comply with the same rules.
Why is this important?
- The aim is to reduce confusion about what can and cannot be recycled, making recycling more efficient.
- It supports the UK’s efforts to move toward a circular economy by increasing recycling rates and reducing landfill waste.
However, Vegware products can be composted alongside food waste, simplifying the recycling process for businesses.
